In 2015/16 following our inaugural lunch in April, the following outings were organized:
June – Visit to Broadstairs during Dickens Week via Whitstable (fish and chip lunch)
October – Visit to Richmond Park (coffee) and The Poppy Museum (tour preceded by lunch)
November –Shopping Trip to Haskins Garden Centre and Gift Shop (cream tea) via Westerham (lunch)
December – Afternoon Tea and Tour of Christmas Lights in the West End
January 2016 – “Ballet at Beckenham” (Evening Trip): Double bill beamed from The Royal Opera House
February 2016 – “Film in February” morning visit to Dulwich Picturehouse for a private screening of
“ The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” followed by a light lunch at The Alleyns Head.
In March 2016 we were relieved and extremely grateful to learn that Southwark Council would kindly repeat their funding once again, which enabled us to launch in style our 2016/17 programme the following month with a First Anniversary (Carvery) Lunch at The Clarendon Lunch, Blackheath.
This event was supported by 67 diners; an increase of ten participants since the previous April. An increase in numbers has been a gradual trend over the year with new members joining the club with each outing: Brighton with tour and cream tea in the Royal Pavilion on 28th May 2016 and attendance on 21st June 2016 at a matinée performance “Happy and Glorious” at St George’s Church, Beckenham in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Our most recent outing was kindly subsidized by the Parochial Church Council: to Hurstpierpoint for a family fun day on 3rd September 2016. FESTIVAL 21 was an event celebrating the 21st Anniversary of Friends of Sussex Hospices. A varied programme of entertainment for all the family included a circus workshop for children, a dance troupe, a vintage funfair, a classic car show, live music (brass band, “Swingtime Sweethearts” singalong and Welsh Male Voice Choir) and a hospitality marquee, where food and drink were on sale throughout the afternoon. As the event did not begin until 2.00pm, there was time for a stop on the way for a light lunch at a lovely country pub in West Sussex dating back to the 16th century.
