Thought for the Week – 31 May 2026

May 28, 2026 by John Wheen

The Holy Trinity for the 21st Century

Trinity Sunday is unique in celebrating a doctrine, not an event or person. The Trinity expresses the relationship between God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as all of the same substance as the Father, but in three Persons, acting in a coordinated, yet distinct way.  Derek H Webster believes our everyday lives reflect the Trinity in all of our creating, redeeming and inspiring:

The Holy Trinity is born anew in us each day of our lives.

In all making of daily plans, meals and journeys;

in all awakening of music, love and friendships;

in all growing of maize, pear and pansy;

in all understanding of energy, motion and matter;

and in all mothering, moulding and manufacturing,

lies the power and purpose of the Father.

He is the creative Source of all.

In all bandaging of knees, kissing cuts and mending toys;

in all giving to empty hands, cheques for refugees and charity stunts;

in each ‘Yes’ for peace, reconciling arm and welcoming the stranger;

and in all compassion, mercy and sacrifice,

lies the redemptive work of the Son.

He makes atonement.

In every poet’s lines, every painter’s strokes and all new inventions;

in each flash of fresh thought and enriching wisdom;

in each loving smile, heartfelt hug and encouraging word;

in all helpful guidance and hopeful ideas,

lies the uplifting work of the Holy Spirit.

It inspires and sanctifies.
