Thought for the Week – 19 July 2026

July 16, 2026 by John Wheen

Forest Bathing

“Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord.”  – Psalm 96:12–13

Walking in the woods is the perfect summer activity. We are fortunate to be surrounded by local parks and woodlands, which are at their most verdant at this time of year. Places to find refreshing shade and serene restoration.

“Forest bathing” is currently trendy with wellness influencers, but the practice has older roots. In Japan it is known as shinrin-yoku and it is actively encouraged. Forest bathing involves walking mindfully among trees, no phone, no conversation, simply noticing the sight, sounds and smells of the natural world.

Scientific research suggests forest bathing can reduce stress, lower blood pressure,  strengthen immunity and improve memory and concentration.

Christianity has long recognised the restorative powers of forests. The Bible uses trees repeatedly as symbols of wisdom, strength and renewal. Indeed, Genesis begins with the Garden of Eden and the Tree of Life.  “Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food” – Genesis 2:9

Why not try upgrading your daily stroll? When you leave St Stephen’s and turn left, you soon come to a white gate with a path leading upwards into a canopy of deep green. Dulwich Woods beckon and this week is a perfect time for walking in cool and quiet contemplation amongst our majestic trees.
