Thought for the Week – Sunday 16 July 2017

July 13, 2017 by John Wheen

Spiritual EnthusiasmWesley

“O God Bless all our work and all our play done today in thy name.”

Throughout my childhood we had family prayers each morning and they always ended with that heartfelt sentence.  It sent us out on a purposeful mission of enjoyment in the security and love of God.

Although we are now in the holiday season it certainly isn’t holiday time for everyone. Our first hymn at our 10 o’clock Sung Eucharist this Sunday reminds us that “Forth in thy name O Lord I go.  My daily labours to pursue”. A hymn written by Charles Wesley (1707 – 1778) the famous and revered hymn writer.

He was the eighteenth child of Susanna and Samuel Wesley and it is his spiritual enthusiasm and talent that makes him especially memorable as the writer of six thousand hymns many of which we sing and enjoy throughout our lives and on a regular basis. Wesley’s hymns are notable as interpretations of Scripture. The accompanying melody often makes the words even more memorable!

Words that are there to encourage us and help us in all our work and all our play done each day in God’s name whether we are on holiday or pursuing our regular daily lives.
