Thought for the Week – 8 October 2017

October 5, 2017 by John Wheen

Memorial GardenGiving

During the month of October St Stephen’s will be asking all our supporters to review their giving to St Stephen’s. If you would like more financial information, a letter from the Vicar and the churchwardens as well as a letter from all the PCC members is available from the sidespeople in Church for you to take home and to contemplate.

St Stephen’s has key financial obligations to our own mission (the building, administration, music and youth work, for example) as well as to the Diocese of Southwark, which we are currently not able to meet. Here are some passages from the Bible to encourage us to be generous and sacrificial in our giving to St Stephen’s:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

(John 3,16)

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income.

(1 Corinthians 16,2)

Each should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

(2 Corinthians 9,7)

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.

(2 Corinthians 9,15)

Set your mind on God’s kingdom and his justice before everything else, and all the rest will come to you as well.

(Matthew 6,33)

It is more blessed to give than to receive.

(Jesus quoted in Acts 20,35)
