Thought for the Week – 6 October 2024

October 3, 2024 by John Wheen

There are many ways to worship

“No I don’t go to Su Presencia Church much now” said the blue haired girl in the Bogota nail bar, “even though there are 7 services every weekend and others in the week. “You always queue for ages to get in; I just watch online.”

With 3000 people at each Service, the Christian Revival in Colombia and South America, is heart-warming indeed. Led by the Australian-Colombian Pastor, Andrés Corson, of international acclaim from a Missionary family, The Place of His Presence is a mighty vehicle of Christian Bible-based teaching and dynamic worship, so important in a Continent fighting to overcome its heritage of corruption and terrorism.

His mother and wife, also Pastors, preach and teach at the Bible College. His daughter and family lead a programme “We are the Revolution” showing young people how to make life choices that will spread change. Children’s church is thriving too!

Su Presencia links people into weekly connection groups of similar life stage or age; single men/ married couples etc. I attended 2 this year as staying long term, 1 for ‘older ladies’ and another couples group with my husband. All follow a syllabus of themes and readings for discussion, led by dedicated and trained volunteers.

I was glad to continue in our St Stephen’s Zoom Bible Study Group whilst away (If you want to join us on Tuesday nights from Dulwich, talk to Susan or Bernhard). Though my husband and I have attended this Evangelical Church often on our yearly visits to family, this year we heard many different Pastors, including Americans, and some like Natalia, a psychologist tackling those difficult issues of mental health and family relationships.

Did we queue? NO! A Welcome Team meets world wide visitors, providing headphones for simultaneous translation. I won’t forget those young Americans on a Volunteers’ Summer Project, overwhelmed by the intense experience of so many young and old worshipping together. Luckily, our daughter, a volunteer leader, teaches correct English pronunciation to the team!  “Jesus did not talk to ‘Kids’ but welcomed CHILDREN” my indignant husband told the other translators!
